Recent trading activity

The first days of trade after the holiday period saw an almost even split of activity between Bordeaux and Burgundy. Cos d’Estournel 2005 and Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 2019 featured among the most active wines.

Demand for Californian wine also picked up. Opus One 2019 set a new trading high at £3,134 per 12×75, up 3.6% on its release price. Screaming Eagle The Flight 2018 also enjoyed rising activity; the wine last traded at £9,000 per case.

Rising number of premier cru and village wines trading

An ongoing trend is the broadening of the secondary market and this is true of Burgundy trade as well.

As our report on the fine wine market in 2022 highlighted, Burgundy has seen exponential growth in recent years.

In 2018, the number of individual Burgundy wines (measured as LWIN7s) trading was 829. In 2020 it was 1,488. In 2022 it was 1,924. It is a seismic shift.

The types of wines changing hands is also striking. The chart above shows that while grand crus dominate Burgundy trade, there has been a considerable rise in the number of premier cru and village wines trading.

This has been the result of buyers seeking value but also stock, as rising global demand has coincided with a series of short harvests in the region.

There are currently £2.5m LIVE Burgundy offers on the exchange. Of these, 43% are Grand Crus, while 34% are for Premier Cru. 22.9% are for village wines.

Gevrey-Chambertin has the highest value of offers, accounting for 6.3% of the total. It is followed by Nuits-Saint-Georges (5.6%) and Vosne-Romanee (5.2%).

Stay tuned, our upcoming report on Burgundy will look at this fine wine region’s performance on the secondary market in more depth.

There are currently over 5,965 LIVE Burgundy opportunities on your exchange.
